Windows Seven
System Upgrade66gixer writes "Do you love Vista? You need to try Seven! Any of you running the 7 beta? I have just installed it on all three of my laptops and it is fantastic, I've had several system crashes...AVG on an upgraded system is a pain but ok on a fresh install. VNC seems reluctant to run and a couple of other little quirks but as this is a beta it's to be expected...... "

I want more!
System UpgradeI put this article under system upgrade because it's exactly what I want. See the link here to find out what I'm talking about. Do you think if I put as a small subscription charge on the site I would be able to afford it?

Upgrades: Major Upgrade
System Upgrade
I have just upgraded the website to (almost!) the latest version. It has been quite a task as I had to edit quite a lot of files by hand rather than just copy them over blindly. This is all due to to the fact that I'd altered so much of the code in the earlier version!

Hopefully security will be a little better. Of course, I couldn't just update it without altering some of the code! I've added some changes myself in the hope that security has been improved further. However, now that I've done all this I'm sure loads and loads of bugs are going to be found!!!

The forum software has taken a bit of upgrading too as part of the site upgrade so, again, the chances are that you'll find something broken somewhere along the lines!

So, be patient! If I find any glaring bugs I'll fix them as soon as I can. Meanwhile, if you find something no longer working as it should then let me know please.

Of course, if you suddenly notice anything that's fixed or new let me know that too! I haven't read through all the docs yet so I don't know how much has changed. I know I have some new options available but whether I can make use of any of them is another matter. ;)

Site Down.
System Upgrade
My apologies go to anyone who tried to access the website last night from around about 10:30pm - 01:30am and found it was down.

As the site was very quiet I decided to take the opportunity to upgrade the server system's storage capacity and to reconfigure it to improve it's performance. However, all did not go to plan.

After I replaced the little 1.6 Gb HDD (used for swap file purposes) with a 40 Gb one I rebooted the system to find my 80 Gb drive had vanished. I have had problems with this drive before but this time it proved to be completely dead. I decided to take a look at it and after some really close inspection I found some odd looking dry joints. That is when I discovered that the ribbon cable connection to the drive motor was floating free! Well, there was no way I was going to be able to do anything with that so out came the soldering iron and some old ribbon cable! I managed to link out the four missing connections, and believe me, it was difficult work. Has anyone tried to solder wires to four adjacent solder points on one side of one of them really small chips? It's definitely not something I want to have to attempt again! Ever!!!

Anyway, I succeeded in the end and managed to bring the drive back online. I also altered the configuration of the drives and now they work much faster and more quietly than they did before so it was all worth it in the end.

The reasons for my upgrading the drives is for my future plans of running an Exchange server in place of my current mailer daemon. I have already carried out some work today, i.e. upgraded my server to a domain controller incorporating DHCP and DNS functions. My router now passes requests for IP addresses straight through to the server rather than allocating them itself. I'm not 100% convinced that the dynamic DNS function is working fully although it's an easy workaround if it's not!

Anyway, enough of my rambling on! I'm off to bed now hopefully in the sure knowledge that the server will still be up and running in the morning!

Upgrades: Upgrades installed.
System UpgradeApologies to anyone who experienced problems accessing the website around 11pm last night. I upgraded the firmware on my router and had to make a couple of minor adjustments to make it all run smoothly again. The firmware update was required really as it has fixed a few minor bugs that very occasionally caused problems. It also increased the security of the firewall and that's never a bad thing. :)

Everything should be up and running again now and should remain that way until the next time I tamper with things!

Upgrades: My computer!
System UpgradeIt's not an upgrade! I overclocked my XP2600+ by raising the FSB to 175 and the memory to DDR420 on Sunday evening just to see how the system behaved. Well, I'd just like to say that it has run perfectly stable since then and the temperature has remained as low as when it's run at it's proper speed. I can't say that I've noticed any difference to when I ran it at it's rated speed but what the heck!

I thought I'd try it out since my overclocked XP1800 system seems to be quite happy running as a XP2000. Latter is most odd, when I had a XP2000 chip on this m/b I couldn't get it to run as a stable system, I had to lower it to a XP1800! Weird, very weird....

Upgrades: Guestbook
System UpgradeI just thought I'd point out that I have now got the guestbook working again! Not really an upgrade, pretty dull really! Still, no info was lost from the massive six entries! :)

Upgrades: Minor upgrade.
System UpgradeAlthough it doesn't mean anything to you lot I thought I'd be smug and add a bit of code to the 'Who's Attending' page. No longer will I get meesages from you saying that the date is wrong because I've forgotten to alter it, it now generates it itself! I'll be interested to see how it is affected on the Friday itself though so perhaps I'd better reserve my smugness until then! :) While I was at it I added another bit of code so that I could clear all the names from the list in one hit; long overdue! Up until now I've had to clear names one at a time. I only had to add 4 lines of code, how lazy I was!!!

Upgrades: Upgrades installed.
System UpgradeI thought I'd let you know that I've just upgraded PHP from version 4.3.2 to 4.3.3 and MySql from 3.23.57 to 4.0.14b. The MySql upgrade is quite a major upgrade so I need to keep an eye out for any possible problems. If you notice anything misbehaving that was previously working fine please let me know asap. Thanks.
